Arabica coffee from Yunnan / China

Turning 2008 / 2009 I moved from Austria to Qingdao in China to
lead and develop an Austrian bakery and a coffee shop.

An adventurous journey in July 2009 brought me to the wonderful
province Yunnan, with its baeutiful villages like Lijiang and
astonishing breathtaking landscapes like Tiger laeping gorge and
Meili Mountain at the border to Tibeth. Shangri La, Stone Forest,
Jiuxiang..... and of course there is much more outstanding places
to see.

The afternoon when I need to go back (thursty to have a nice coffee)
I passed a samll shop and got a superb coffee tasting.

As a Austrian grew up in the hospitality buinsess, nice and excellent
coffee is an everyday must have for me.

But what was this?........... just sensationell coffee quality on a place
where you never would expect it.

This made me really curious.

On my question where the coffee beans are coming from, the owner
told me, they are coming from the plantation of her brother growing
in the greather region of Dali.

What a big surprise, I expected everything except this!

The mountains in this region are 4000 meter above sea level and
higher, I knew about coffee production from my journeys to Indonesia
and also Vietnam.

Coffee growing in China??? and not only in any bad or average quality.

No it´s finest TOP quality highland Arabica. Not only this, in the
meanwhile silently China become one of the largest Arabica producers
in the world. Until now only a small amount of people in the western
world have some knowledge that there´s coffee growing in China!

Even expats living for years in China, most of them don´t know about
that coffee plantations exists in this country.

The next step was to find out more about this well hidden coffee
producing destination. After some investigation I found out that
it was around 1880 that the French (coming from Lao and Burma / today Myanmar) brought the first Arabica coffee plants to Yunnan.

Today there are 3 main regions where Arabica coffee grows all of them
are close to the borders to Myanmar, Lao and Vietnam. The Arabica
grows at a altitude between 1000 to over 2500 meter above sea level.

Experts say, that today the highland arabica coffee which grows on
the foothills of the Himalaya in Yunnan display one of the best and
most exzellent flavours and the original perfect Arabica coffee tasting
in the whole world.

In the meanwhile very silent and hidden from the rest of the world,
China becomes one of the 10 largest producers of coffee worldwide.

Hainan Island is well known for the excellent Robusta coffee, what
is normaly the low and cheaper level coffee - not that nice for
trinking - but the coffees I tasted was also excellent, but many times
greater is the production of fine Arabica coffee beans in Yunnan .

To get better idea and to have more knowledge I invested a lot of
time to visit the different regions to see a lot of farms and plantations,
meet a lot of people to get as much knowledge as possible about this
fast growing buisness in September 2009.

It was „off season“ this time (harvest coffee starts in December and
goes until May depend on the year) - but even interesting to talk with
the Farmers and Roasters.

In October I moved over from Qingdao to Kunming (capital from Yunnan)
willing to start this interesting business.

My target is to connect different things - offer customers around the
world this fantastic highland Arabica coffee with the pure and natural
flavour (not like many others you find accross the border) united with
the goal to help the very poor farmers in this region.

At least I started the business selceting finest coffee beans from the
farms in the mountains, blend and roast beans from different regions
to perfection vended and sold them under my label Wild Beans Of China
